Today we toured the Valley of the Temples in ancient Agrigento. This archaeological site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is actually the largest archaolgical site in the world! In the museum, we saw many artifacts including hand carved and painted vases, made by the ancient Greeks.
In one of the rooms, we stood next to a statue over 25 feet tall. These statues were used as decoration and support for the Zeus temple as seen in a replica.
After visiting the meusem, we ventured through the Valley of the Temples. The preservation of some of the temples we saw, especially the Temple of Concordia, was astounding. To see something from that long ago still standing was unreal.
The countryside hotel was one of our favorites of the trip. We wish we had stayed more than one night there.
Dinner was altogether that evening, so we were able to get to know our tour travel buddies better. Our favorite travel mates were a couple from Washington, Chris and Star. Eric became fast friends with Chris.
